THE PLUMBER AND THE DIVA
Written by Ross Nobel
Directed by Simon Phillips
With Ben Harkin, Jenny Voletic, Kristen O'Leary and Glynn Nicholas
In the world of Opera, where enormous egos and crude appetites reign, young love and old lust collide in a tale of two great operatic stars, a beautiful and ambitious understudy, and a naïve plumber. A plumber? Indeed!
With an injection of great Australian creative talent, the musical genre is pumped up and muscled-honed, in this exciting and feisty brand new musical comedy, The Plumber and the Diva.
It is a tale of intrigue, love and betrayal with unforgettable songs, in which neither plumbing nor opera have ever looked so good!
Two aging opera stars, the philandering, Testeroni and his Diva wife, Elizabeth, struggle with the rigours of old age and unfulfilled dreams. Into their lair of vanity the young, beautiful Lucy enters as understudy to the Diva. It is not long before Testeroni has her under study with the full force of his lecherous and ample body. With her dreams of stardom and sophistication tarnished, Lucy finds consolation in the arms of the earthy Opera House plumber, Will. He immediately falls hopelessly in love with her.
In his quest for the girl, our plumber is drawn up to the world of opera where he reveals his enormous vocal talent, and his quickly whisked away from his world of s-bends and pipes to one of glamour, Green Rooms, outrageous costumes and lusty machinations of the Diva. Pompous pretension, egotistical desire, malevolence and death soon follow.
The Plumber and the Diva is rich in wit and heart, with just a touch of larrikin and bravado, is a fabulous two-act production.
